How ‘Gay’ is Your Car?
01.05.07
Do your friends ever tell you how “gay” your car is? You may want to see if visitors to Wheels24, a South African website, agree.
Wheels24 recently asked visitors to determine the "Alternative Car of the Year.” After three weeks of furious voting, the site unveiled the trio of new car models that most wowed the online auto crowd. From there, they crowned the “gayest” and “straightest” cars.
Topping the list of “gay” cars is the vivacious Peugeot 207. Next in line is the muscular Audi RS4, tagged by Wheel24 as the "straightest” car. Alfa Romeo Brera was awarded the "rear of the year" title. All three models launched this year.
Given the success of the inaugural Wheels24 campaign the site’s owners have decided to make it an annual event. Visitors to the site can vote for their favorite newly released cars to make them one of the most popular in the auto industry.
The “Alternative Car of the Year” campaign was conducted in cooperation with Road Angel Navigator, South Africa's premier in-car global positioning system (GPS). Thus far the campaign has recorded more than 16,000 votes.
Of the cars vying for the title of “gayest car,” the Peugeot 207 received 7,155 votes, the BMW 3 Series Coupe came in with 3,378 votes, the Jaguar XK garnered 2,571 votes, Honda’s Civic Hatch earned 1,776 and the Alfa Romeo 159 got 1,293. These cars were designed to capture the fetishes of car owners who wanted nothing less than striking, sleek and stylish cars worthy of widespread attention. According to Wheels24, gay cars are curvaceous and atypical, and are loved by artsy aficionados.
Those in the running for the “straightest car” title included the Audi RS4, which garnered 9,824 votes, the Toyota Fortuner (2,629 votes), the Dodge Caliber (1,808 votes), the Volkswagen Jetta (979 votes) and the Lexus IS250 (936 votes). “Straight” cars are bulky and muscular, according to Wheels24. They don't have shapely curves, but they do have endurance and performance.
