the funny thing is, everyone in the village knew angela was a woman even they made an announcement that the priest made a mistake and she disguised herself as a man. remember there was a scene where she had to strip butt naked in front of an officer? i mean people knew, they all just pretended, didnt wanna face the fact, and thought it's ok as long as angela and sara did what is acceptable to the mass or majority. so the point of pretending was? just to be a heterosexual couple to be acceptable and accessible to "others" thus they could be free? to me, sara and angela were trapped since. guess they had no choice. sad, isnt it.

it wan't so much that people didn't want to face with the truth that Angela was indeed a woman, as it is that Angela's father pressured everyone in the village to accept Angela as a man. one of the workers at the quarry didn't even try to pretend: he blatantly confronted Angela to "man up", and then attempted to rape her.
from my understanding of the movie, Sara and Angela didn't want to pretend to be a hetero couple. Angela was forced to live as a male by her father. other the other hand, her mom, who has unconditional love for Angela, seemed to be fine with her lesbian relationship. I would say if Angela's father didn't intervene in their relationship by locking Angela in a cellar, they probably would have lived as a normal, lesbian couple.
throughout the whole movie I didn't feel that the villagers were as much homophoic as they were misogynistic. even though it's a lesbian movie, I feel that it conveys a much greater contempt and hatred for women in general, than it does particularly for lesbians.
I have the exact sentiments on the born-gay issue as you. Sadly, scientists haven't been able to locate a single gene that can determine our sexuality. and there hasn't been any conclusive studies that prove homosexuality is inborn. |
